Top 3 Business and Marketing Lessons Learned in 2011

What a year! 2011 certainly yielded a big stick! After 4 years of a depressed economy, we saw many businesses, big and small, either get tossed for a loop or knocked out of the game completely. Rest assured, just like how nature always has a way of getting things back in balance… so does business. And for those of us who withstood the thrashings of 2011, I do believe this means increased opportunity in the years ahead!

For Online Marketing Muscle and me… 2011 was chock full of considerable wins and significant lessons… some lessons were awesome… and others will sting for a while! What follows is my top 3… my hope is that you pull some value out of them as well. Here goes:

Lesson #1 – I Was Looking For ‘Lessons’ In All The Wrong Places!

I’d have to say that my most significant a-ha lesson this past year was gaining clarity that lessons do not only come from negative experiences, they come from positive ones as well! As a matter of fact, my most impactful lessons of 2011 came from… you guessed it, positive experiences. And as I focused on the lessons showing up for me from those experiences, more positive lessons appeared. How’s that for the Law of Attraction?!

Case in point… I always wanted to write a business book as I felt I have a ton to share, however for some reason it eluded me. In 2011, I got serious about it and formed a joint venture with a mastermind partner of mine, Barry Laub to co-author what we feel is something unprecedented in a business book… a book neither of us could produce alone. Best part about it though, the writing process has simply been one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve had professionally! The lessons that show up every single time we chat are simply unbelievable!

So here, the positive experience of the mastermind process led to positive experience of a joint venture to co-author a book which in turn has led to an insurmountable number of positive lessons and experiences… how cool is that! Thank goodness I paid attention to the lessons learned from positive experiences!

By the way, we expect the book to be in print during the 1st quarter of 2012… stay tuned!

Lesson #2 – In Marketing, Less Is More, So Choose and Engage!

I cut out a significant amount of fruitless networking and redeployed the time saved to other marketing initiatives that made more sense… ones that were producing more value… looking back many months later, smart move! Additionally this freed up time to engage more deeply in networking that showed the most promise… case in point Twitter.

I dabbled on Twitter for years but never really ‘engaged’. Hence, my results reflected my investment appropriately. Then once I decided to play full out, I saw enormous possibility. I met amazing entrepreneurs, brilliant marketers and lots of prospects! The key on Twitter was to engage regularly, get involved in organized Twitter chats and look to really add value and connect with people!

Lesson #3 – Strategic Hits!

Simply put, strategic, timely, and targeted hits are what drive in the runs and ultimately, win games!

For example, one big speaking gig in front of the right audience at the right time had outshined dozens I did front of the wrong ones. This ties into the whole busyness versus business concept. Busyness is not better! Busyness does not equal business! Busyness is a distraction! Putting more effort into the pre-gig, the gig itself, and post-gig efforts of this one specific speaking gig has paid, and will continue to pay off in spades. Why? Going deep with this one marketing initiative as explained in the previous lesson learned.

So in closing, Online Marketing Muscle and I both grew a lot in 2011. That growth would not have been possible if we had neglected to harvest the many lessons available to us. Lessons that arose both through negative and positive experiences. I for one am truly grateful for these lessons as I firmly believe they open doorways to an even brighter future!

Who Me… A Twitter Snob?

To this day, I still remember Mom saying to my brothers and me “I don’t want you hanging around with that kid… he’s nothing but trouble!” Of course back then we didn’t see it that way however many years later, now a Dad myself, I understand where she was coming from. She believed that our peers significantly influenced who we would become in life.

Fast forward to the modern day, Mom’s message still resonates. Until recently, on Twitter I’ve for the most part operated under the premise of follow me and I’ll follow you back. I never understood what harm it could do by just following anybody and everybody. Was I being ignorant? Unfortunately if I wanted to increase my results online I was.

In today’s online world, Mom’s philosophy is more true than ever… not solely of course however we are being judged and prejudged based on who we hang around with.

Let me explain.

First up… Google. In a nutshell, one of the key factors on the success of how well your web site ranks in Google is due largely in part to what web sites we link to and more importantly what web sites link to us. The more credible (and complementary) the web site linking to and from us, the better we rank. The better we rank the more opportunity opens up.

Second up… Klout. In a nutshell, Klout measures your online influence. I believe it started with social media sites like Twitter, and then expanded to others such as Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, and more. One of the key factors that Klout appears to rank (or judge) you on is based on whom you follow, connect, or link to on these sites. Hang around with those who are less of a social media dynamo then you, your Klout score goes down. Pal around with the Twitter elite, your Klout score goes up.

Now of course these are not the only factors that play into how well we rank in Google or how high our Klout score is, however they appear to be significant.

And be sure to understand that people you may want to connect with are checking you out online first… prospects Google you before they meet with you… the Twitter elite check out your Klout score before following you… and so on. Yes, whether right or wrong, we use these tools to judge people.

So for the first time after several years on Twitter, I began heeding Mom’s advice (to a degree) and started looking into ways to improve my Klout score… here’s where my competitive nature reared its ugly head…one such way was simply to unfollow those with low Klout scores while interacting more with those who had higher Klout scores than me. Now rest assured that my sensitivity wouldn’t allow me to be ruthless here, however I did unfollow about 25% of those I was following. I cut those who hadn’t tweeted in over 6 months. I cut those who either weren’t following me back or willing to engage in the social networking aspect of Twitter (not including major personalities, news sources, and other entities I like of course). I cut the spammers. I cut those who appeared to be using the distasteful tactic of “I follow you… you follow me back… I unfollow you so I bulk up my number of followers while keeping the numbers I follow small… oooh I don’t like that one.

So the big question is… Is being more selective on whom I follow snobbish? Have I become a Twitter snob?

Hello, Is There Anybody In There?

Don’t you find it amazing how once you notice something, it seems to show up everywhere in your life? Well that seems to always be the case for me. Once I tune in to anything, it shows up everywhere. The latest…the concept of conscious listening (or the lack of it thereof).

I hop into my email and lo and behold, seemingly jumping out at me was an email from TED.com with the subject line “5 ways to LISTEN BETTER”. You gotta love it!

I recommend you watch the video below that was referenced in that email. I believe it’s well worth your 7 minutes and 50 seconds of time! There is one particular concept that the thought leader Julian Treasure mentions that really sparked deep thought for me. It’s that conscious listening creates understanding. Powerful statement… don’t you agree?

So take a look at the video below. Heed its advice. Get in a quiet place for a few minutes and ask yourself some serious questions such as:

Are you consciously listening to your clients? Are you sure? How about your target market? What’s important to them? What messages and/or signals are they putting out there that maybe you haven’t picked up on yet? How else can you increase your level of conscious listening?

It is my belief that your results directly reflect your degree of conscious listening… after all, effective communication is a two-way street.
